Turn Your Brights On
What'd ya gonna do when things get gloomy? Add color till it's bright out and wear your giant shades. That’s my current tactic and I am sticking to it. Out of necessity!
Necessity is the mother of invention, after all, as Plato wrote. Sometimes the only bridge I can build to the outside world is from the britches I wear.
Clothing is both a mask and a form of expression. Can I wear a mask but also have it express my core at the same time? Can clothing both protect and reveal? We need a balance of each. It does not work to go out completely masked. If we do, it is difficult to make a connection with others. And it is illegal to be totally naked, unless you don’t go out!
So what’s a girl to do? Just do your best! Today, I am stepping out in red and fake leopard, and the lichen is liking my leopard spots. And I am not worrying about the fact that my leg warmers look a little goofy or my boots are size eleven. Because the red rose and the hat knitted by my good friend’s mom offset it.
Goofy. Stylish. Vulnerable. Hiding. Flamboyant. Showboat. The “mask” I wear reveals my true self.
Is there a mask you wear that both reveals and conceals?
